Grounding Strap
A grounding strap—also known as a ground strap or earth strap—is a conductive device used to safely discharge static electricity or redirect electrical current to the ground (earth). It helps protect electronic components, equipment, and people from electrostatic discharge (ESD) or stray voltage.
Common Types of Grounding Straps:
ESD Wrist Strap (Anti-static Wrist Strap):
Worn on the wrist to safely discharge static from the human body.
Commonly used in electronics manufacturing and repair environments.
Automotive Grounding Strap:
Used in vehicles to connect metal parts to the chassis ground, reducing interference and preventing electrical faults.
Industrial Ground Straps:
Braided copper straps used to ground machines, structures, or containers.
Key Functions:
Dissipate Static Charge: Prevents ESD that can damage sensitive components.
Ensure Electrical Safety: Routes fault current to ground in case of insulation failure.
Reduce EMI (Electromagnetic Interference): Stabilizes signals in electrical systems.
Where It’s Used:
Electronics assembly lines
Cleanrooms
Server rooms or data centers
